Zelensky Plans to Discuss Ukraine's NATO Invitation with Biden
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky intends to hold a phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss Ukraine's potential invitation to NATO. Zelensky stated that it makes no sense to discuss this issue with Donald Trump before he assumes office.
Zelensky on the Importance of Talking to Biden
Zelensky emphasized the urgency of discussing Ukraine’s NATO aspirations with Biden, highlighting the current president’s pivotal role:
“I plan to call President Biden soon, if he has the opportunity to speak with me, and raise the question of an invitation to NATO, because he is the sitting President of the United States, and much depends on his position.”
Why Not Trump?
Zelensky explained that discussing NATO membership with Donald Trump before his potential return to the White House would be premature:
“There is no point in discussing this with President Trump as, for now, he is not in the White House, and this doesn’t depend on him.”
This pragmatic approach underlines Zelensky’s focus on engaging with leaders who currently hold decision-making power.
The NATO Context
Ukraine continues to pursue accelerated NATO integration amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. However, the process faces several challenges:
- Unanimous Support Needed: NATO membership requires approval from all alliance members.
- Concerns About Escalation: Some NATO countries remain cautious about potential conflict escalation.
While Biden has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine, extending an official NATO invitation requires collective agreement among member states.
Potential Outcomes of the Call
A successful dialogue with Biden could:
- Strengthen Ukraine’s diplomatic standing.
- Facilitate more active NATO support for Ukraine.
However, the unresolved NATO invitation issue could become a point of negotiation amid shifts in U.S. leadership.
