Trilateral Alliance Negotiations

On March 5, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed ongoing talks with the US regarding the establishment of a US-Israel-Azerbaijan alliance. If realized, this would be a significant geopolitical shift in the region.

On March 14, Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Baku following his visit to Moscow. According to The Jerusalem Post, this visit is part of a coordinated diplomatic effort aimed at deepening US-Israel-Azerbaijan cooperation.

Sources familiar with Israel-Azerbaijan relations report that diplomatic activity has intensified since March 5, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized in the Knesset the strategic importance of a trilateral partnership.

Azerbaijan’s Emerging Role in Diplomacy

Experts view Witkoff’s visit as a sign of Azerbaijan’s growing role in international diplomacy. His direct arrival from Moscow to Baku has fueled speculation about Azerbaijan’s potential role as a mediator between the US and Russia.

Challenges to the Alliance

One major obstacle remains the US Section 907 Amendment, which restricts military aid to Azerbaijan. Forbes notes that this hinders Azerbaijan’s full integration into the Abraham Accords. However, Israeli religious leaders have reportedly petitioned Trump to consider Azerbaijan’s inclusion in these agreements.

Strategic Implications

Political analysts suggest that closer ties between Israel, the US, and Azerbaijan could reshape regional dynamics. Azerbaijan already maintains strong strategic ties with Israel, particularly in defense and energy, while its cooperation with the US is expanding through economic and political initiatives.

If successfully formed, the trilateral alliance could shift the balance of power in the South Caucasus, bolstering US and Israeli influence. However, Russia and Iran’s geopolitical interests remain key obstacles to this partnership’s success.

Despite these challenges, Baku is reinforcing its diplomatic significance, positioning itself not only as a regional economic hub but also as a strategic platform for international negotiations.
