The Capital Under Rebel Control

At around 6 a.m., rebels announced they had seized Damascus, including key locations like the Saydnaya Prison, known for holding political prisoners. Upon freeing the inmates, the rebels declared the moment “the end of an era of injustice.”

State-run TV and radio stations were also taken over. In a broadcast, the rebels announced the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the release of political prisoners, urging citizens to protect the property and order of the “Free Syrian State.”

Government Response

Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali was the only official to comment, pledging to maintain continuity of governance and cooperate with a new leadership chosen by the Syrian people.

Assad’s whereabouts remain unknown, though unverified reports suggest a lone flight departed Damascus for Moscow on the day the capital fell.

Challenges Ahead

The international community has called for a peaceful transition of power and an end to violence. Analysts warn that while the capital’s capture was swift, rebuilding trust and stability will take time.

As Syria moves into an uncertain future, the responsibility lies with its new leaders to address the deep divides within the country.
