What kind of money credit Kazakhstani men can take without spouse's consent
Kazakhstan plans to introduce a norm, according to which to obtain a consumer unsecured loan for the amount of more than 1,000 MRP (MRP - monthly calculation index), it will be necessary to obtain the consent of a spouse. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Regulation and Development of Financial Market Olzhas Kizatov on the sidelines of the Senate on 23 May.
Senator Sergei Karplyuk clarified that we are talking about a loan over 1,000 MRP, which is equivalent to about 3.7 million tenge. For loans of less than this amount, the consent of the spouse will not be required. If the borrower is married, the information will be checked through the civil registry database, and if the spouse is listed in the database, consent will be a prerequisite for obtaining a loan.
Olzhas Kizatov explained that setting the threshold at 1,000 MSE is intended to make decisions on large loans more informed, with the participation of both spouses. This is also aimed at reducing the number of fraudulent operations in the market of banking services. He noted that many life situations may require urgent expenses, such as medical treatment, and an amount of 1,000 MRP would be sufficient to cover such needs without the consent of the spouse.
From 2025, Kazakhstan is also introducing a rule that requires citizens to declare their assets, including bank account balances, if they exceed 1,000 MRP. This is another reason why such a threshold for mandatory spousal consent to obtain a loan has been chosen.
In addition, Kazakhstan plans to tighten the conditions for obtaining loans for individuals by requiring biometric identification to protect citizens from fraud.
