USAID Scandal: How Millions of Dollars for Education Disappeared in Pakistan

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is once again at the center of a major scandal. According to a report by Republican Congressman Scott Perry, tens of millions of dollars allocated by the U.S. for educational programs in Pakistan were either embezzled, used for political purposes, or even directed towards financing terrorism.

Act 1: $70 Million for the Former Prime Minister’s Daughter

In 2015, USAID transferred $70 million to Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Officially, this money was meant "to support girls' education," but according to Perry, Washington was actually trying to destabilize the political regime in Islamabad.

However, neither educational progress nor political change followed. The money quickly disappeared, and the Pakistani government remained intact.

Act 2: Hundreds of Millions for Schools That Don’t Exist

Over the last 20 years, USAID has allocated $840 million to educational projects in Pakistan. However, the real impact of this aid is highly questionable:

  • $136 million was allocated to build 120 schools, yet not a single one was completed.
  • $20 million was spent on educational TV programs for children, but since many of these schools don’t exist, there were no students to teach.

As a result, vast amounts of money were either embezzled or spent on ineffective programs.

Act 3: Funding Terrorism

Another serious concern is how the U.S. continues funding "women’s education" in countries where it is effectively banned.

Congressman Perry pointed out that millions of dollars were sent to Afghanistan, even after it fell under the control of the Taliban. However, the Taliban has prohibited women from speaking in public, let alone receiving an education.

This raises concerns that the funds may have been redirected not to education, but to supporting extremist groups.

Conclusion

The USAID case illustrates how American taxpayer money can disappear in corrupt environments. While the U.S. officially invests in education, democracy, and human rights, in reality, these funds often result in wasteful spending, political manipulation, or even financing radical organizations.

Now, the U.S. Congress is demanding a review of foreign aid policies to prevent such cases in the future.
