USA Won’t Get Greenland — Firm Response from Prime Minister Nielsen

Statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump that the United States “will get Greenland” provoked a strong response from the island’s official authorities. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a firm statement, ruling out any transfer of control over the territory.

“Let me be clear: The United States will not get Greenland. We do not belong to others. We decide our own future. That was true yesterday. That is true today. And it will remain true in the future,” Nielsen declared, speaking in the capital of the autonomous territory.

Trump’s rhetoric had previously caused an international stir. In 2019, he proposed buying Greenland from Denmark, drawing negative reactions in both Copenhagen and Nuuk. Although the initiative did not move forward then, Trump revived the topic during a recent campaign rally.

Prime Minister Nielsen stressed that Greenland is not merely a geopolitical asset, but a land with a unique culture, history, and the right to self-determination. The island enjoys wide autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark and has its own government, parliament, and internal jurisdiction.

Greenland holds a strategic position in the Arctic, is rich in natural resources, and is becoming increasingly important amid global warming, which is opening new transportation routes and exploration opportunities. The United States has maintained a military presence on the island, including the Thule Air Base, but any talk of changing sovereignty meets firm resistance.

Experts note that rising rhetoric around Greenland may reflect broader discussions about the status of Arctic territories and U.S. ambitions in the region. However, as Nielsen’s response shows, any such attempts will be met with a resolute refusal.
