U.S. Suspends WTO Funding — Trump Cites Cost-Saving Decision
Washington halts payments covering 11% of the organization’s budget, citing national interest priorities.

The administration of Donald Trump has decided to suspend financial contributions to the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to Reuters, citing sources in the international trade sector.
The U.S. previously contributed about 11% of the WTO’s total funding. These funds were allocated to support the organization’s administrative operations, dispute resolution panels, trade policy reviews, and other key functions.
The White House explained that the decision is part of a broader spending optimization program and aligns with the “America First” agenda. Administration officials stated that the U.S. will no longer spend taxpayer money on “unnecessary international institutions that bring no direct benefit to the American economy.”
This move may deal another blow to the WTO, which has already been experiencing a trust crisis in recent years—especially following the U.S. blockade of the organization’s appellate body during Trump’s previous term.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the WTO for being “biased in favor of China and other countries” and for failing to protect American manufacturers and exporters effectively.
The organization may now face a funding shortfall unless other member states step in to cover the loss from its largest donor.
