UN investigates allegations of sexual exploitation of refugee women in Chad
The UN has launched an internal investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation of Sudanese refugees by humanitarian workers in Chad.
The United Nations has launched an internal investigation following an Associated Press publication alleging that humanitarian workers in Chad engaged in the sexual exploitation of Sudanese refugees.
The UN representative and humanitarian coordinator in Chad, Francois Batalingeya, said: "Refugees are already vulnerable because of the traumatic events that forced them to leave their country, and under no circumstances should they become victims of violence by those who should help them." The UN confirmed the seriousness of the allegations and promised to take decisive action.
The organization is working with local authorities and human rights groups to bring those responsible to justice. Restoring the trust of refugees in humanitarian organizations remains a priority. The UN has called on anyone with information about such cases to report it immediately.
