UN denies Israeli claims of sufficient food supply in Gaza
The United Nations called Israel's claims of adequate humanitarian supply levels in the Gaza Strip “absurd.” A rapidly escalating crisis is unfolding in the region.

The UN sharply responded to statements from Israeli authorities claiming that there is no food shortage in Gaza. On April 1, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the situation in the region is critical and called Tel Aviv’s claims “ridiculous and mocking.” He noted that global humanitarian organizations are at their limits, and aid deliveries have virtually stopped.
According to him, the World Food Programme (WFP) is being forced to shut down bakeries in the northern part of the sector due to a lack of flour and fuel. Gaza’s population is on the brink of mass starvation. Dujarric stressed that humanitarian cargo is being closely monitored and that food and medicine supplies are nearly exhausted.
Israel’s military body COGAT previously reported that around 25,000 aid trucks were sent to Gaza over the six-week truce. However, according to the UN, the volume of aid was insufficient, and since the military operation resumed on March 18, access to aid has again been blocked.
Dujarric said that during the truce, there was an influx of aid, price drops, and a recovery of trade. However, with the renewed Israeli strikes, the humanitarian situation deteriorated sharply. Israeli authorities refuse to open humanitarian corridors, insisting on the unconditional release of all hostages by Hamas. This position has drawn condemnation from the UN and international organizations, including the Red Cross.
According to Palestinian sources, since October 2023, the Israeli operation in Gaza has claimed more than 50,000 lives, including women and children. Over the past two weeks alone, more than 1,500 people have died in strikes. Humanitarian organizations warn that ongoing aid restrictions and violations of international norms could lead to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
The UN emphasizes that using hunger as a method of pressure is a violation of international humanitarian law and may be classified as a war crime. UN representatives stated the need for an immediate end to the blockade of humanitarian routes and the resumption of food, water, and medical aid deliveries to the besieged areas of the sector.
Despite international calls, Israel continues its military operation and maintains aid restrictions. The current situation in Gaza is already under review by UN human rights mechanisms, including provisions of the Genocide Convention. Humanitarian structures on the ground are reporting the onset of mass starvation, which could lead to catastrophic consequences for the enclave’s entire population.
