Turkey is hosting transport ministers from Iraq, Qatar and the UAE in Istanbul to discuss an ambitious $20 billion trade route linking the Persian Gulf to Europe. The massive project would involve building a rail and road network from Iraq’s Gulf port of Faw to the northern border with Turkey, before continuing by rail across the Bosphorus to Istanbul.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been pushing the route and is seeking support from Qatar and the UAE to finance its construction. The project promises to be a key element in strengthening economic ties between the Gulf and Europe, and would significantly speed up and simplify trade flows between the two regions.

The project highlights Turkey’s important role as a bridge between East and West, as well as its ambition to develop transport infrastructure that could lay the foundation for further economic growth and regional cooperation.
