Trump’s Announcement

Donald Trump confirmed that classified materials on the assassination of the 35th US president, John F. Kennedy, will be made public on March 18. He made this statement during a visit to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

“People have been waiting for this for decades… Tomorrow, a massive number of documents—about 80,000 pages—will be released,” Trump stated, emphasizing that no data will be altered or concealed.

Decades of Secrecy and Partial Disclosures

Trump had previously promised to declassify these materials during his election campaigns and first presidential term. He claimed the release was in the public’s best interest.

Since 1992, US authorities have gradually disclosed information about Kennedy’s assassination, but a significant portion remained classified. In 2023, the US National Archives released approximately 2,700 records. In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order for full declassification of JFK-related files, along with documents concerning the deaths of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

In February, the FBI discovered 2,400 additional classified documents on Kennedy, amounting to 14,000 pages, following an investigation launched at Trump’s request.

Background on JFK’s Assassination

John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a convertible with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally. He suffered fatal wounds to the head and neck, while Connally was wounded but survived.

Impact and Conspiracy Theories

The US government’s longstanding refusal to fully declassify JFK’s case has fueled numerous conspiracy theories. The release of new documents may shed light on unresolved questions surrounding the assassination that have persisted for more than 60 years.
