Airstrikes on Sanaa

American strikes targeted a residential district in northern Sanaa. Footage circulating online shows black smoke rising over the Yemeni capital’s airport complex, which, according to reports, houses a major military facility.

Reasons for Escalation

US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to use "overwhelming lethal force" in response to Houthi threats to resume attacks on Israel and Israeli-linked ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. He stated that the US would not allow any force to disrupt free navigation.

The Houthis, who control a significant portion of Yemen, had previously vowed to attack ships linked to Israel if Benjamin Netanyahu’s government violated a ceasefire agreement with Palestinian groups in Gaza. They claimed their actions aimed to support Palestine and resist Israeli occupation.

Since the conflict escalated in 2024, Houthi forces repeatedly attacked international trade vessels passing through Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes between Europe and Asia. Two ships were sunk, and four sailors were killed in these incidents.

Washington’s Response

The US government asserts that its strikes on Yemen are a defensive response aimed at preventing further attacks on commercial vessels. The White House released an image of Donald Trump monitoring the operation in real-time.

"Our brave military is carrying out airstrikes on terrorist bases as we speak," Trump declared on social media.

Pentagon officials stated that precision weapons were used to target only military sites. However, reports of civilian casualties have sparked international criticism.

Impact of the Airstrikes

Several buildings, including residential homes, were destroyed. Yemeni sources report women and children among the injured. France 24 noted that one of the strikes hit a major military site, though the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

The Houthis have vowed retaliation, calling the US strikes an act of aggression. Houthi leaders warned that the attacks on Yemen will not go unanswered and pledged new strikes on American and Israeli interests in the region.

International Reaction

The escalation has sparked global concern. The UN has urged both sides to exercise restraint, highlighting Yemen’s severe humanitarian crisis, where years of war have led to widespread famine and destruction.

European nations have expressed alarm over the US military operation. France and Germany urged Washington to pursue diplomatic solutions, but US officials insisted that they would protect global shipping routes from any threats.

Possible Consequences

The situation remains highly volatile. If the Houthis follow through on their threats with new attacks, the US may escalate its response further. This raises the risk of a wider conflict that could draw in other Middle Eastern countries.
