Tokayev: Presidential Form of Government Is the Most Optimal for Kazakhstan
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that the presidential form of government is the most suitable for Kazakhstan. The President emphasized that a transition to a parliamentary system is possible only through a referendum, but the current system, "Strong President – Influential Parliament – Accountable Government," better suits the country's needs.
The President on the Choice of Government Form
In an interview published by Zakon.kz, the President of Kazakhstan was asked about the prospects of transitioning to a parliamentary system. Tokayev noted that while the parliamentary form of government is valid, its effectiveness in post-Soviet countries remains questionable.
"Recent events in Georgia clearly support this conclusion," he explained.
The President emphasized that choosing a form of government should be based on broad public consensus and decided exclusively through a national referendum.
"Strong President – Influential Parliament – Accountable Government"
Tokayev expressed confidence that the current system, which balances presidential power, parliament, and government, is the best fit for Kazakhstan.
"For the full realization of this concept, we still have significant work ahead. However, I am convinced that the presidential form of government is the most optimal for Kazakhstan now and in the foreseeable future," the President noted.
He added that any decision potentially jeopardizing the country's stability and sustainable development is unacceptable.
