In Mecca, Saudi Arabia, extreme heat has caused more than a thousand deaths during the annual Hajj. The Hajj is an obligatory pilgrimage for Muslims, one of the five basic precepts of Islam, requiring a visit to Mecca if health and finances permit.
This year, pilgrims faced abnormally high temperatures reaching +51.8℃, which was recorded on June 17 by Saudi Arabia's National Meteorological Centre. The extreme heat was the main cause of numerous deaths among pilgrims and tourists.
Deaths during Hajj occur regularly, especially among the elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases, the source noted. However, such a large number of casualties has caused particular alarm.
