The world's largest food market in Mexico City has become the world's largest solar power plant
Mexico City is home to the world's largest grocery market, Central de Abasto, which has also become the largest rooftop solar power plant in the world, generating up to 25 GWh of energy per year.
Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is home to the world's largest food market, Central de Abasto, which operates around the clock and covers an area one and a half times the size of Monaco. The daily turnover of the market is more than 30,000 tons of products, which corresponds to 75% of all food consumed in Mexico City. The number of buyers at this market can reach 300,000 people per day.
Recently, Central de Abasto has also become the largest rooftop solar power plant. It has 32,000 solar panels on its roof that generate up to 25 GWh of energy per year. This amount of electricity is enough to supply 10,000 homes. The move not only reinforces the market as a central hub for supplying the city, but also makes it an example of renewable energy in an urban setting.
