What Happened?

During his speech, Ischinger declared that Trump’s America now lives in a different reality and that Europe and the U.S. no longer understand each other – for the first time since World War II.

His reaction was triggered by a blunt statement from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who made it clear that the United States is stepping away from guaranteeing Europe’s security.

"America is leaving. Europe must solve its own problems. You, Europeans, played a role in starting the war in Ukraine, and now we are left to clean up the mess," Vance said.

Following these words, Ischinger’s voice broke, and he stepped away from the podium, descending into the audience to a standing ovation. Before leaving, he simply stated:

"This is Europe's nightmare day."

Why Is This Significant?

  • The U.S. has essentially declared that it will no longer act as Europe's default security guarantor.
  • Washington no longer sees itself as the leader of the "collective West."
  • This marks the most serious crisis in transatlantic relations in decades.

How Is Europe Reacting?

  • France and Germany are in shock, realizing that the U.S. is pulling away from European affairs.
  • Poland and the Baltic states are panicking, as they had relied on long-term U.S. military protection.
  • Brussels is now openly discussing the creation of an independent European army, though it's unclear how feasible this is.

What Comes Next?

  • Will Europe seek negotiations with Russia? This possibility now seems more realistic as the U.S. signals its withdrawal from the conflict.
  • Can the EU develop an independent defense system? The European security structure has depended on the U.S. for decades.
  • What will happen to NATO? Some analysts are predicting an internal crisis, should the U.S. continue distancing itself from European issues.
