The Isolation of Israel: The World Turns Away as Knesset's "Democracy" Takes New Steps

Israel is increasingly losing international support, as major companies and organizations distance themselves from its structures. Meanwhile, the Knesset continues to pass laws that restrict democratic freedoms, including banning cooperation with the International Criminal Court and imposing financial restrictions on NGOs. As a result, Israel is isolating itself further, sustaining only the illusion of democracy.

The World Turns Away from Israel

Israel’s international isolation is deepening, with more global companies cutting ties with its institutions.

The latest example is the termination of sponsorships with the Israeli Football Association by:

  • Puma
  • Adidas
  • Errea (which withdrew less than two months after signing)

Clearly, global boycott campaigns and public pressure are effective. Companies no longer want to associate with a regime losing legitimacy.

Instead of responding with reform, the Knesset is passing laws that increase censorship and repression.

Knesset's "New Democracy"

Recently, the Israeli parliament passed two controversial bills, raising serious concerns about democracy.

Amendment to the 1980 Associations Law

This bill tightens control over foreign funding of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

  • Foreign political donations will be taxed at 80%
  • The Israeli finance minister can exempt "approved" NGOs
  • Israeli state-funded NGOs are not affected

This allows the government to favor loyal organizations and suppress critical human rights groups like B’Tselem.

Bill Banning Cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC)

After the ICC issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the Knesset retaliated by proposing a law banning Israeli citizens from assisting the court.

If passed:

  • Cooperating with the ICC will be punishable by up to 5 years in prison
  • Even posting images of Israeli war crimes could lead to prosecution
  • Journalists exposing IDF violations will face legal threats

This law effectively legalizes censorship, criminalizing criticism of the Israeli army.

"Democracy" Israeli-Style

Freedom of speech?
A ban on cooperating with the ICC.

Transparency?
Crushing human rights organizations.

Democracy?
Criminalizing journalists for publishing the truth.

While global brands distance themselves from Israel, its government tightens repressive measures.

This is no longer just international isolation—it is self-isolation, all while claiming to be a democracy.

How much longer can Israel maintain the illusion of being "the only democracy in the Middle East"?
