Taliban to take part in COP 29 climate conference in Azerbaijan
For the first time, representatives of the Taliban will take part in the KAP 29 international conference in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024. The Afghan delegation will discuss climate challenges and cooperation.
Representatives of the Taliban will take part in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024. This is the first time that representatives of the Taliban have participated in an international conference since they came to power in August 2021. The representative of the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Abdul-Kahar Balkhi, confirmed the participation of a delegation that will represent the country's interests in climate change issues. Among the key topics that the Afghan representatives intend to discuss are floods, droughts and their impact on food security in the region. Despite the lack of international recognition, the Taliban's participation in COP29 allows them to establish limited interaction with the international community. However, this involvement is controversial. Human rights organizations have criticized the Taliban's invitation, pointing to their human rights policies. Nevertheless, experts emphasize the importance of discussing global climate challenges and drawing attention to Afghanistan's environmental problems.
