South Korean President impeached: opposition demands investigation
The South Korean parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeon. The opposition demands the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the attempted violent seizure of power.
South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol was impeached — the decision was made by the country's parliament, where 204 deputies voted in favor, 85 opposed, three abstained, and eight ballots were declared invalid.
The opposition, which played a key role in initiating the process, calls for the early appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the attempted violent seizure of power, Yonhap reports.
The impeachment of Yoon Seok-yong was the result of the growing political crisis in South Korea. The decision was made amid accusations of violating democratic norms, as well as speculation about the influence of First Lady Kim Kong-hee on the president's political decisions, including the imposition of martial law.
The situation continues to escalate, and the opposition demands a transparent investigation of all the circumstances that led to the crisis. Political experts believe that the current impeachment could be a turning point in the recent history of South Korea and lead to significant changes in the country's political system.
Further developments will depend on the decision of the Constitutional Court, which must confirm or reject the impeachment, as well as on the progress of the investigation initiated by the opposition.
