Russia, US Seek Emergency UN Security Council Meeting Over Syria
The situation in Syria continues to escalate. In connection with the mass killings of religious and ethnic minorities, Russia and the US have jointly proposed holding emergency closed consultations of the UN Security Council.

Escalation of the Conflict and the US Position US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington condemns the radical Islamist terrorists who, in recent days, have carried out massacres of civilians in western Syria.
“The US stands with Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, including Christians, Alawites, and Kurds. The temporary authorities in Syria must immediately hold accountable those responsible for the mass killings,” the statement reads.
For the first time, Washington openly acknowledged that the temporary government of Syria does not control the situation and is allowing ethnic cleansing. This statement was significant, as the US had previously supported regime change in Syria but now demands an investigation into the crimes committed within the country.
Mass Killings and the Flight of Civilians According to international observers, more than 1,000 people have become victims of ethnic cleansing in recent days. The main targets of the attacks have been Alawites, Christians, and Kurds, whom the new authorities in Syria view as a threat to their power.
Hundreds of Alawites were shot after the suppression of uprisings in Latakia and Tartus.
Christians are being persecuted, with their homes set on fire and families separated.
Kurds are facing attacks, as their autonomy is perceived by the new authorities as a threat.
Civilians are fleeing in panic from their homes. According to the UN, the refugee flow into Lebanon has increased several times, creating a risk of a new humanitarian crisis. In addition, hundreds of Alawites and Christians have found refuge at the Russian Khmeimim airbase, hoping for protection from further repressions.
Russia's Response and the UN Security Council Moscow also sharply condemned the mass killings and supported the call for emergency consultations in the UN Security Council. Russian diplomats are demanding:
- Immediate investigation of the crimes committed against civilians.
- Official security guarantees for ethnic and religious minorities.
- Cessation of repressions and accountability for the perpetrators.
The question now is how other members of the Security Council, particularly Western countries, which previously supported regime change in Syria, will respond to these demands.
What Will It Lead To? The joint initiative to discuss the crisis by Russia and the US shows that the situation in Syria is causing serious international concern. This may be the first step toward external intervention or the creation of an international mission to protect civilians.
However, many questions remain:
- Are the new authorities in Syria ready to stop the repressions?
- Will Western countries take strong measures against the radicals?
- What will happen to the refugees, and will a new wave of ethnic cleansing be stopped?
The UN Security Council consultations could be a pivotal moment that will determine the further development of the conflict in Syria and the possible actions of the international community.
