The incident took place in the morning when the trucks, en route to local post offices, were attacked on a road segment. Masked robbers blocked the vehicles' path using a van set on fire in advance to obstruct traffic.

Immediately after stopping the vehicles, the assailants fired warning shots into the air to disorient guards and civilians. According to preliminary reports, they acted in a coordinated and professional manner — in a matter of minutes, they broke into the armored vehicles, took a large amount of cash, and fled in several cars previously parked nearby.

It is estimated that the trucks were transporting around four million euros intended for pension disbursements through the national postal service. The money was expected in multiple towns across Tuscany, where thousands of pensioners were awaiting their payments.

Police have launched a large-scale search operation. Police helicopters patrol the area, mobile checkpoints have been set up, and nearby wooded areas are being combed. Forensic specialists and organized crime experts are assisting in the investigation.

Eyewitnesses described a high level of preparation by the robbers. Initial versions suggest the heist was thoroughly planned — including the cash vans’ route and diversion tactics. Law enforcement officials suspect the criminals may have had access to insider information, such as the exact transport schedule.

Italy’s Ministry of the Interior has already called the event a “national security challenge” and promised urgent measures to enhance the protection of cash shipments. Additional units of the Carabinieri have been deployed to the region.

Local authorities expressed concern that such an attack occurred amid ongoing economic instability and mounting social tensions. Delays in pension payments may affect tens of thousands of elderly citizens, particularly in smaller towns and villages.

At the time of publication, the investigation was ongoing, with surveillance footage under review and a search for potential witnesses underway.
