Putin Open to Negotiations with Zelensky
Moscow no longer rules out direct dialogue with Kyiv

Moscow does not oppose negotiations with Volodymyr Zelensky, despite Vladimir Putin's previous statements about his "illegitimacy." This was confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
What Did the Kremlin Say?
According to Peskov:
- The Kremlin acknowledges that Zelensky has legal legitimacy issues.
- However, Russia remains open to negotiations despite this.
- Moscow expects interest from Kyiv, which could be demonstrated by repealing the law that bans negotiations with Putin.
Zelensky’s Readiness
On February 4, Zelensky stated that he does not rule out negotiations with Putin if it is the only way to achieve peace.
"If this is the only configuration in which we can achieve peace for Ukrainians and avoid losing people, then of course we will go for it," the Ukrainian leader said in an interview with Piers Morgan.
He added that the negotiations should include the EU and the United States.
Why Were Negotiations Previously Impossible?
- Putin called Zelensky "illegitimate", arguing that his mandate expired on May 20, 2024.
- In 2022, Zelensky signed a decree banning talks with Putin, citing the fight against separatism.
- He only considered negotiations if the U.S. or the EU provided security guarantees.
Now, the situation is shifting: both sides are open to the possibility of dialogue, which could mark the first step toward diplomacy.
