Protests in Buenos Aires: Clashes and Casualties
Protests against pension cuts continue in the capital of Argentina. Over 120 people have been detained, and 20 injured, including photographer Pablo Grijo, who is in critical condition.
Mass demonstrations against pension reforms have been ongoing for half a year, regularly escalating into violent clashes with law enforcement. The latest events near the Argentine Congress led to the detention of more than 120 people, while 20 protesters were injured. Security forces used rubber bullets, smoke bombs, tear gas, and water cannons.
Photographer Pablo Grijo was injured during the crackdown. He suffered a traumatic brain injury after being struck by a tear gas canister, leading to fractures and brain damage. He underwent a complicated surgery overnight, and his condition remains critical. Local media are circulating calls for blood donations for Grijo, and his fate has become one of the main topics of public discussion.
Minister of the Interior Patricia Bullrich has already commented on the situation, calling the injured photographer a "hardcore Kirchnerist," thus distancing herself from possible accusations of excessive use of force. If Grijo were to die, the protest movement could gain new momentum.
One of the few incidents without serious consequences was the fall of an 87-year-old pensioner during the demonstration. After hitting her head on the pavement, she suffered minimal injuries and is in stable condition.
The situation in Buenos Aires remains tense. Protesters continue to demand the repeal of pension reforms, while authorities are strengthening security measures to prevent further unrest.
