UK Prime Minister Starmer: Support for Ukraine Will Be Doubled
Following the European summit in London, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a significant increase in military aid to Ukraine. He emphasized that the new funding would ensure arms supplies without burdening British taxpayers.
Starmer stated that the UK has signed a £2.2 billion credit agreement to provide additional military assistance to Ukraine. These funds will be allocated from the profits of frozen Russian assets rather than the UK budget.
Additionally, the British government announced a new deal allowing Ukraine to use £1.6 billion in export financing. These funds will be used to purchase more than 5,000 anti-aircraft missiles, which will be produced in Belfast. Starmer noted that this project will not only strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities but also create new jobs in the UK defense sector.
"This will be vital for protecting Ukraine’s critical infrastructure now and strengthening its security in the future, once peace is achieved," the Prime Minister emphasized.
Starmer also highlighted the need to learn from past mistakes. He stated that agreements like the Minsk accords should not be repeated, as they do not provide real security guarantees. Instead, he argued that any future settlement must be based on strength, and partner countries must contribute by offering various forms of support to Ukraine.
Thus, the UK reaffirms its commitment to strengthening military and financial assistance to Kyiv while utilizing frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s benefit. This decision aligns with the broader strategy of Western countries to reinforce Ukraine’s position in the long term.
