Over 600,000 New Tokens Launched on the Crypto Market in January
In January 2025, the cryptocurrency market saw a record surge in new token launches, surpassing 600,000, which is 12 times higher than the monthly average for 2022–2023, according to CoinGecko.
Why Is This Important?
- Exponential Growth – By late 2024, about 400,000 tokens were being created each month, but in January 2025, the number skyrocketed.
- Easier Token Creation – The rise of instant token launch platforms, such as Pump.fun (Solana) and SunPump (Tron), has fueled the explosion of new crypto assets.
- Market Risks – Analysts are concerned about capital dilution and reduced liquidity, which could slow down the growth of major altcoins.
What Experts Say
CoinGecko co-founder Bobby Ong warns that an excess of tokens is scattering investor attention and reducing the likelihood of strong altcoins emerging, as seen in previous market cycles.
"Too many tokens are draining market liquidity. That’s why we’re not seeing the rise of major altcoins like before," he says.
According to CoinGecko, if this trend continues, the total number of tokens could surpass 1 billion within five years.
Blockchain Infrastructure Expansion
Alongside this token boom, the blockchain and decentralized exchange (DEX) ecosystem is also growing:
— 5–10 new blockchains are launched every month.
— May 2024 saw a record 17 new blockchains go live.
— March 2024 recorded 89 new decentralized exchanges.
The cryptocurrency market continues to expand rapidly, but its saturation may force investors and regulators to rethink their strategies.
