Older people in the UK face a daunting winter outlook. Due to a budget deficit, Chancellor Rachel Reeves plans to scrap heating allowances, which range from £100 to £300 depending on a pensioner’s age and living arrangements. The benefit will only be retained for those receiving Pension Credit, a benefit for those over 66 who are in need.

Unions such as Unite have been urging MPs to reconsider the proposal, fearing that pensioners will be forced to choose between paying for heating or buying food. Unite leader Sharon Graham said she was unhappy that the government had decided to cut pensioner benefits while leaving the richest people alone. She said a wealth tax would be a fairer solution.

The upcoming changes could leave many older people unable to survive the cold winter or facing bankruptcy due to unaffordable heating bills.
