Old-style dollars flooded the exchangers of Kazakhstan
There is a shortage of dollars in the banks of Kazakhstan. Exchange offices offer banknotes until 2009 at a reduced price, but they are not accepted in a number of countries.
In the branches of banks in Kazakhstan, it is increasingly possible to hear the phrase "Dollar jok" ("There is no dollar"), which indicates a serious shortage of the American currency. Against the background of this situation, exchangers began to actively offer old-style dollars issued before 2009.
These bills, known as "white", are sold at a discounted price of 512 tenge per dollar, unlike the standard rate of 521 tenge. However, such banknotes are no longer accepted in many countries, including Turkey, the UAE, Vietnam and Thailand.
Tourists have repeatedly faced refusal to accept this money, which causes additional difficulties when using it abroad. Experts recommend checking the quality of bills in advance and exchanging them for new ones before traveling to avoid problems. The National Bank of Kazakhstan also warns citizens about the need for care when exchanging currency. Thus, the current currency deficit exacerbates the situation, forcing citizens to look for alternative ways to purchase dollars, but the use of old banknotes can create additional difficulties.
