Olaf Scholz calls for significant financial support for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Western countries to provide Ukraine with large-scale financial assistance at a press conference held jointly with French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to Scholz, the EU and the G7 countries have already provided Ukraine with significant amounts of support over the past two years, but now it is proposed to expand this assistance by reinvesting frozen Russian assets.
Scholz emphasised that EU countries are discussing the possibility of using these funds to strengthen Ukraine's security and, more broadly, to ensure stability across Europe. ‘Our aim is to provide Ukraine with billions of euros in additional financial resources to support its self-defence capability and contribute to pan-European security,’ he said.
The Chancellor also said that consultations will be held in the coming weeks to develop a sustainable action plan that will express a unified decision to support Ukraine. In this regard, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell noted that disagreements between EU countries make it difficult to allocate an additional 6.6bn euros for armaments for Kiev. He specified that the issue was under discussion and several documents were already awaiting approval in the EU Council.
