On December 5, a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Northern California. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was located 25 kilometers west of Ferndale, in Humboldt County. The tremors were felt as far south as San Francisco, about 435 kilometers from the epicenter.

Impacts of the Earthquake

  • Aftershocks: Smaller quakes followed the main shock, with seismic activity continuing throughout the day.
  • Damage: There were no reports of severe injuries or major destruction, though local businesses like Golden Gait Mercantile in Ferndale experienced disruptions, with shelves emptied and glass shattered.
  • Power outages: Temporary outages were reported in parts of the region.

Tsunami Warning

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning covering 805 kilometers of coastline, stretching from Monterey Bay to southern Oregon. The alert urged residents to:

“Move to higher ground or inland. Stay away from coastal waters until authorities announce it is safe to return.”

The warning was lifted after about an hour when further risk was ruled out.

Seismic Context

Northern California is one of the state’s most seismically active regions, where the Pacific, North American, and Gorda tectonic plates converge.

The area experienced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in 2022, which left thousands without power or water.

Seismologist Lucy Jones commented:

“The northwest region of California is where nature reminds us of its power. Earthquakes like this are expected, but they highlight the importance of preparedness.”

What’s Next?

Authorities are assessing infrastructure for damage, and residents are advised to remain vigilant as aftershocks may continue in the coming days.
