North Korea conducted test launches of strategic cruise missiles in the waters of the Yellow Sea. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the country’s leader Kim Jong-un personally attended the drills, highlighting their importance for national defense.

Pyongyang stated that the goal of these exercises was to demonstrate the Korean People's Army's ability to launch counterstrikes anywhere and to inform adversaries of the country's nuclear readiness. The report noted that the missiles traveled 1,587 kilometers in an oval trajectory over 130 minutes, precisely hitting their designated targets.

Kim Jong-un expressed satisfaction with the test results, emphasizing that possessing a powerful offensive capability is the most effective means of deterrence and defense. He stated that regular verification of nuclear deterrence capabilities is a responsible measure to ensure national security. The North Korean leader also stressed the need to maintain absolute combat readiness and the ability to deploy nuclear forces immediately to protect the country’s sovereignty.

These tests mark yet another missile launch by North Korea in 2025, forming part of the country's broader military buildup strategy. Pyongyang has previously declared its intention to respond to increasing military threats from the United States and its allies, highlighting the need to strengthen its nuclear capabilities to deter potential aggression.

South Korean military officials confirmed the missile launches, stating that they had tracked several cruise missiles fired by North Korea into the Yellow Sea. In response, the Republic of Korea Navy conducted its own exercises in the same region to enhance combat readiness and strengthen defense capabilities. The drills involved warships, submarines, and aircraft.

International Reactions and Security Concerns
The international community has expressed concern over North Korea’s ongoing missile tests, viewing them as a potential threat to regional stability and security. The United Nations Security Council has previously imposed sanctions on Pyongyang for developing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons, but cruise missiles are not explicitly covered by these restrictions, complicating diplomatic efforts to curb North Korea’s military activities.

Experts suggest that Pyongyang’s latest actions may be aimed at strengthening domestic unity and showcasing independence in the face of international pressure. Additionally, North Korea may be seeking to strengthen its bargaining position in negotiations with the US and its allies, signaling its readiness for decisive measures in response to external threats.

Given the latest developments, regional players—including South Korea and Japan—may revise their defense strategies and increase cooperation with the United States to counter potential threats from North Korea. Meanwhile, the international community continues to call for dialogue and a peaceful resolution of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, fearing further escalation and potential military conflicts.
