Nigeria Becomes a Partner Country of BRICS

Brazil, which assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2025, announced Nigeria’s inclusion in the group as a partner country. In an official statement, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that BRICS and Nigeria share common interests, including strengthening cooperation among Global South countries and advancing reforms in international organizations.

Context

  • Partner Country Group.
    In October 2024, the BRICS summit in Kazan introduced a new framework— the Partner Country Group. The initial members included Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Nigeria has now joined this initiative.

  • Brazil’s Presidency.
    Having taken over the presidency from Russia, Brazil is actively pursuing initiatives to enhance BRICS' influence within the Global South.
