A group of New York state Democrats has proposed adding Hamas and Hezbollah symbols to the list of banned imagery, alongside the swastika and other symbols classified as "extremist." According to the Israeli news outlet YNET, the bill was drafted in response to the growing number of protests in the U.S. against Israeli policies, during which flags of these movements were displayed.

The authors of the initiative believe that banning these symbols will help reduce tensions and prevent potential conflicts. However, critics argue that such a law directly infringes on freedom of speech, which is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Protests in support of Palestine have spread across major U.S. cities in recent months, including New York. Student movements, in particular, have been actively organizing marches and demonstrations on university campuses. In some cases, protests have escalated into clashes with police, leading to mass arrests.

The proposed ban has sparked mixed reactions in American society. Supporters argue that Hamas and Hezbollah symbols are associated with terrorism and should not be publicly displayed. Opponents, however, view this as an attempt to politically pressure protesters and restrict their right to express their views.

It is worth noting that during his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly stated his intention to crack down on student protests supporting Palestine, which could signal further repressive measures if he returns to power.

The adoption of such a bill could set a dangerous precedent in which the government restricts freedom of expression under the pretext of combating extremism. It could also deepen divisions in American society, where views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remain one of the most contentious issues in foreign policy.
