MSI Lists RTX 5080 with 24GB Memory — Mistake or Leak?
An unusual RTX 5080 graphics card configuration appeared on the company's website. While the official specs include 16GB of memory, MSI's list mentions 24GB of VRAM.
An RTX 5080 with 24GB of memory unexpectedly appeared on the compatibility page for the MSI X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi motherboard. This caught the attention of users and specialists, as the standard RTX 5080 configuration comes with 16GB of video memory.
The same list includes other expected models — the RTX 5090, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. However, the mention of a 24GB version of the RTX 5080 seems unusual, as NVIDIA partners generally cannot independently modify memory configurations, especially in reference models.
The RTX 5080 uses a 256-bit memory bus and, by default, comes with 16GB of VRAM. Nevertheless, it is theoretically possible to use GDDR7 modules with 3GB each, which could allow for 24GB — similar to the mobile version of the RTX 5090.
So far, MSI has not made any official statements regarding the unusual RTX 5080 variant. This leaves two possible explanations: either it was a mistake when filling out the page, or a leak hinting at a future non-standard modification.
There have been previous examples of custom graphics cards with increased memory. For example, Chinese versions of the RTX 4090 are released with 48GB of VRAM, and their price is comparable to high-end RTX 5090 cards. While the increased memory does not provide a direct performance boost in games, it can be useful for AI tasks, modeling, visualization, and processing large volumes of data.
The question also remains for NVIDIA — will the company allow partners to release RTX 5080 versions with expanded VRAM, or will it remain a one-off technical experiment?
Gamers are unlikely to notice a major difference between 16GB and 24GB in current-generation games, but for professional use and graphics work, it may be an extra argument in favor of such a configuration.
