Morocco to Purchase 168 Trains from France, Spain, and South Korea for $2.9 Billion
Morocco's state-owned railway company ONCF has signed contracts with Hyundai Rotem, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, and Alstom for the supply of 168 trains. The purchase aims to modernize the country's transportation network ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco’s state railway company ONCF has announced the purchase of 168 trains worth $2.9 billion from France, Spain, and South Korea. This large-scale project is part of Morocco’s extensive infrastructure modernization plan in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
The train supply contracts were awarded to three leading global manufacturers:
- South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem will supply 110 trains, securing the largest contract.
- Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) will deliver 40 trainsets.
- France’s Alstom will provide 18 high-speed trains.
This initiative marks a significant step in the development of Morocco’s railway network, enabling a major expansion of rail infrastructure and improving passenger transportation efficiency.
Expansion of Morocco’s Railway Network
Moroccan authorities plan to extend the high-speed rail network from Kenitra on the western coast to Marrakech and further south to Agadir. This will enhance connectivity between key cities and improve access to the national transportation system.
ONCF aims to double the number of cities served by 2040—from the current 23 to 43—covering 87% of the country’s population.
Importance of the Project for Morocco
The procurement of new trains and the expansion of railway infrastructure play a crucial role in preparing for the 2030 World Cup, which is expected to bring a sharp increase in passenger traffic. Additionally, the project will contribute to Morocco’s economic development by creating jobs and improving logistics.
Future Prospects
Morocco already boasts the most advanced railway network in Africa, including Al Boraq, the continent’s first high-speed rail line connecting Tangier and Kenitra. With this latest initiative, the country is taking the next step in modernizing its transport system and solidifying its position as a regional transportation hub.
The project is expected to attract new investments and accelerate the growth of Morocco’s tourism sector, playing a key role in the country’s economic expansion over the coming decades.
