Morocco Purchases Israeli Artillery Ammunition in Contract with Elbit Systems
Morocco has signed a contract with Israeli defense company Elbit Systems for the supply of new artillery ammunition. The deal is part of the country’s military modernization program and was signed despite a previous contract with France.

Why Did Morocco Turn Away from French Howitzers?
According to the French newspaper La Tribune, Morocco has acquired 36 Atmos 2000 self-propelled howitzers, mounted on Czech Tatra trucks. The decision was influenced by technical issues with the French Caesar KNDS howitzers, which were delivered to Rabat in 2022.
French media reports indicate that:
— cooperation between Morocco and France failed to resolve malfunctions in the French artillery systems;
— the company KNDS was slow to respond to Moroccan military requests;
— Israeli Atmos 2000 howitzers offer greater mobility and rapid deployment, making them a more reliable alternative.
Morocco-Israel Military Cooperation
This is not Morocco’s first defense deal with Israeli companies. Rabat has been strengthening its military ties with Israel:
— In 2022, Morocco purchased the Barak MX air defense system from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for $500 million;
— In 2024, Morocco ordered two Ofek-13 satellites worth $1 billion.
Political Implications of the Deal
Morocco and Israel restored diplomatic relations in December 2022 with the mediation of the United States. However, this move sparked protests among Moroccan citizens and political groups that oppose military cooperation with Israel.
Despite public opposition, Morocco continues to strengthen its armed forces, choosing Israel as a key military partner.
