Moroccan Court Cancels Deportation of Uyghur Activist
A Moroccan court has ruled to release Uyghur activist Yidiresi Aishan, who was wanted by China. Despite the cancellation of an Interpol warrant in 2021, he spent three and a half years in prison.

On Thursday, a Moroccan court overturned the decision to deport Uyghur engineer and activist Yidiresi Aishan to China. The court also ordered his immediate release from prison. His lawyer, expressing satisfaction with the ruling, announced the decision.
Aishan, a father of three and a web designer for a Uyghur-Muslim online newspaper, was arrested in 2021 upon arrival in Casablanca. The arrest was based on an Interpol "red notice" issued at China's request. However, later that year, Interpol suspended the notice, meaning the international arrest warrant was no longer legally valid. Despite this, Moroccan authorities kept Aishan imprisoned for over three years.
The activist’s defense repeatedly argued that his extradition to China would pose serious human rights violations, including possible persecution and torture. Uyghur rights organizations also opposed his deportation, citing extensive evidence of Uyghur persecution in China.
After reviewing the case, the Rabat court ruled in favor of Aishan’s release, annulling the order for his extradition to China. This decision marks a significant victory for human rights defenders and the international community opposing Uyghur persecution.
Aishan’s case has drawn global media attention, with human rights organizations closely monitoring his situation since his arrest. His lawyers now emphasize that the main priority is ensuring his safety and securing asylum in a country where he will not face persecution.
