Loans by person: Russia is introducing biometrics into finance and control
The State Duma of the Russian Federation approved the law on biometrics: Russians will be able to open accounts and take loans through the EBS by voice and face. The system will also block the sale of prohibited goods to minors.
Russians will be able to open accounts and apply for loans through a website or mobile application using biometric data — face and voice. The new law, approved by the State Duma on December 12, is based on the use of a Unified Biometric System (UBS).
The authorities assure that the system is reliably protected from data leaks and is already functioning successfully. Further development of the EBS is planned, including use to control age restrictions. For example, the system will be able to determine the age of the buyer and block the sale of energy drinks to minors.
The initiative provokes discussions in society. Some believe that this will simplify financial services and increase security, while others fear possible risks of data leakage and increased digital control.
The development of biometrics in Russia highlights the desire for digitalization and modernization of the system of interaction of citizens with financial and other services. New technologies can be an important step forward if their implementation is accompanied by strict measures to protect personal information.
