Speaking at a briefing, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Guterres, being a citizen of Portugal and a person “who spent half his life working in international structures,” should understand the role assigned to the Secretary-General by the UN Charter. In particular, Lavrov referred to Article 100 of the Charter, which states that the Secretary-General should not receive instructions from governments and must observe neutrality, pursuing only the goals of the UN.

The reason for the criticism was Guterres’s speech at a ceremony dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. According to Lavrov, in his speech Guterres did not mention the Red Army even once, which played a key role in liberating the camp’s prisoners. Lavrov noted that the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established precisely on the occasion of Auschwitz’s liberation by Soviet soldiers on January 27, 1945.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that such ignoring of historical facts and the USSR’s contribution to the defeat of Nazism is a dangerous trend, and expressed regret that even top UN officials succumb to political conjuncture. He also reminded that the United Nations was created following World War II precisely with the participation of the USSR as one of the victorious countries and a permanent member of the Security Council.

Earlier, the Russian side repeatedly stated attempts to rewrite the history of World War II and diminish the role of the Soviet Union in liberating Europe from Nazism. In this context, Lavrov’s words are a continuation of the course to protect historical truth and memory of the feat of Soviet soldiers.

The United Nations itself has not yet commented on the statements of the Russian Foreign Minister. However, experts note that such diplomatic signals reflect growing tension between Russia and UN structures, especially regarding the interpretation of historical events and their representation on the international stage.
