Kazakhstan Monitors Situation in South Korea: Protecting Citizens Abroad
After martial law was imposed and then lifted, Kazakh diplomats stand ready to ensure the safety of their compatriots.
Recent developments in South Korea, where President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law only to see it overturned by parliament, have caught Kazakhstan’s attention. Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek Bakayev reported that over 30,000 Kazakh citizens reside in South Korea, none of whom have sought assistance from the Kazakh Embassy so far.
The foreign ministry emphasized that despite political turbulence, there are currently no threats to Kazakh citizens. However, the embassy in Seoul has advised its nationals to avoid public gatherings and maintain contact with diplomatic representatives.
Why Does South Korea Matter to Kazakhstanis?
South Korea has become an attractive destination for Kazakhstanis. The visa-free agreement introduced in 2014 has opened doors for education, employment, and tourism. Currently, more than 30,000 Kazakh citizens are in South Korea for various reasons, ranging from short-term visits to long-term stays.
Despite the appeal, recent political instability has raised concerns. Martial law briefly heightened tensions, prompting Kazakh diplomats to urge caution.
A Proven Track Record in Citizen Protection
Alibek Bakayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s experience in evacuating citizens from conflict zones. During the crises in Israel and Ukraine, the government promptly organized repatriation flights for those in need.
In South Korea, however, such measures are not currently required. “Kazakh citizens have not requested assistance, but should they do so, the embassy is fully prepared to provide support,” Bakayev stated.
What Comes Next?
Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry continues to closely monitor the situation in South Korea. Its primary focus remains the protection of the rights and safety of its citizens abroad. Nationals are advised to exercise caution, avoid protests, and promptly contact the embassy if necessary.
As South Korea works to restore political stability, Kazakhstan stands ready to act in the best interests of its citizens.
