Israel's Covert Operations in Lebanon: Terrorist Tactics Against the PLO
During the First Lebanon War, Israel used terror tactics against Palestinian targets by detonating car bombs in Lebanese cities. Ronen Bergman, in his book Rise and Kill First, describes how such operations were carried out with the support of Ariel Sharon.
In his book, Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel's Targeted Assassinations, Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman reveals shocking details of Israel's operations in Lebanon during the First Lebanon War (1975-1990). Beginning in mid-1981, car bombs were regularly detonated in Palestinian areas of Beirut and other Lebanese cities. In December 1981 alone, 18 explosions were recorded, killing hundreds of civilians.
The operations were carried out under the cover of a fake organization, the "Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners," and the explosives for the car bombs and donkeys were manufactured in the laboratories of the Israel Defense Forces' Special Operations Directorate. According to Bergman, these attacks were carried out with the aim of destabilizing the region and provoking retaliatory actions.
Future Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon actively supported these actions, hoping that they would lead to an invasion of Lebanon under the pretext of protecting local Christians. Although Yasser Arafat blamed the Mossad for these attacks, the organization itself was against mass killings, considering such actions excessively cruel.
This period left deep scars in the history of Lebanon and became the starting point for the development of terrorist tactics that Hezbollah later used.
