Israel Accused of Over 100 Ceasefire Violations in Lebanon
According to the UN, reported via CNN, Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon over 100 times. These allegations are based on reports from peacekeepers documenting the incidents.
UN peacekeepers have documented over 100 instances where Israel allegedly breached the ceasefire in Lebanon in recent weeks. These violations include airspace incursions, artillery fire on border areas, and ground crossings by Israeli troops. The uptick in incidents has raised alarm over the fragile stability of a region that remains tense since the 2006 conflict.
Southern Lebanon: a Persistent Flashpoint
Southern Lebanon has long been a flashpoint in the conflict between Israel and the Shia group Hezbollah. Following the 2006 war, the UN implemented Resolution 1701, aimed at halting hostilities and preventing future flare-ups. Yet, the peace process remains precarious.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), tasked with monitoring the situation and facilitating Hezbollah’s disarmament, has stated that recent actions by Israel violate the spirit of the resolution. Israeli officials, however, argue that these measures are a response to ongoing threats from Hezbollah.
What the UN Reports
According to UNIFIL, Israel routinely conducts reconnaissance missions using Lebanese airspace. Peacekeepers also report frequent artillery fire targeting southern Lebanese areas and incidents of Israeli soldiers crossing the border.
“These actions increase the risk of escalation and endanger the safety of local populations,” a UN spokesperson said. “We urge both parties to uphold their commitments under Resolution 1701.”
Israel’s Stance
Israel claims its actions are solely defensive. The defense ministry argues that Hezbollah continues to build its presence near the border, posing a serious threat to Israeli citizens.
Lebanese officials, on the other hand, view Israel’s actions as a violation of their sovereignty and regularly file complaints with the UN.
Risks for the Region
Experts warn that the situation in Southern Lebanon risks spiraling into a broader armed conflict. Any escalation could affect not only Israel and Lebanon but also neighboring states like Syria and Iran, which back Hezbollah.
“Every ceasefire violation is a step closer to a new war,” said a Beirut-based political analyst. “The parties must return to negotiations, or we risk witnessing another Middle Eastern catastrophe.”
