India faces the possibility of mass protests after a tragic incident in Kolkata, where the body of a 31-year-old intern was found. According to preliminary reports, she was raped and murdered. This shocking incident has caused a wave of indignation among the medical community in the country.

Today, the Indian Medical Association announced a 24-hour strike by doctors, demanding necessary measures to protect their rights and improve working conditions. Doctors in several government hospitals have already stopped routine patient care, treating only emergency cases.

The tragedy in Kolkata has become a catalyst for a wider discussion on the social vulnerability of women and doctors in India. The problem of violence against women in the country is actively discussed in the Western media. Doctors are demanding measures under the Central Protection Act to prevent such incidents in the future.

Protests have already spread across some Indian cities, with signs reading “Hands that heal should not bleed” in Kolkata and “Too much is too much” in New Delhi. Working conditions for doctors in India remain harsh, with many forced to work 36 hours without a break and often lacking dedicated rest rooms.

According to Western media, there were about 90 rapes a day in India, a country of 1.4 billion people, in 2022, highlighting the scale of the problem and the urgent need for change.
