History and Concept

Icehotel was first established in 1989 and has since been rebuilt every year. It is constructed using approximately 500 tons of ice harvested from the Torne River. Artists and designers from across the globe transform the ice and snow into breathtaking art.

Each season, the hotel includes:

  • 12 luxury suites and 20 rooms with unique interiors;
  • Ice sculptures, each created by invited artists;
  • A temporary art installation that disappears with the spring thaw.

Highlights of the 2023/2024 Season

This year, Icehotel will operate until April. The rooms offer an all-ice experience: walls, beds, furniture, and decorations are entirely made of ice. The interior temperature is kept at -5°C, with guests provided thermal sleeping bags and wool blankets for comfort.

Pricing and Popularity

A night at the Icehotel starts at 6,300 Swedish kronor (approximately $570 or 300,000 KZT). Despite the high price, it remains a favorite destination for tourists seeking unique experiences and memorable photos.

Tourist Significance

Icehotel is a key part of Lapland’s tourism industry:

  • Attracting thousands of visitors annually;
  • Inspiring similar ice-based projects worldwide;
  • Combining art, nature, and extreme experiences.

Environmental Aspect

The hotel fully melts each spring, returning the ice to the natural environment. This cyclical process makes Icehotel not only visually stunning but also an environmentally sustainable example of tourism.
