How the Purge of American Bureaucracy is Progressing: Musk vs. the System
After Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, began its work in the U.S. Its mission is to reduce bureaucracy, eliminate wasteful government spending, and optimize the functioning of federal agencies.

First Results and Resistance from the System
Since its creation, DOGE has conducted audits of the Treasury Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The investigations uncovered numerous violations, leading to estimated savings of around $1 billion. However, further reforms have faced strong opposition.
Courts have restricted DOGE’s access to key financial and contracting systems within the Treasury Department and imposed a temporary ban on firing USAID employees. Meanwhile, Democrats are actively using legal obstacles to slow down the department’s work.
Expanding Investigations
Despite resistance, Musk is pressing forward. DOGE is now conducting audits of the Departments of Education and Health, with reports suggesting that Musk’s team is using artificial intelligence to identify suspicious spending and possible corruption schemes.
The next major target is the Department of Defense. Donald Trump has already announced that the Pentagon will soon come under investigation.
Political Battle
Republicans support Musk’s initiative, arguing that DOGE could expose long-standing corruption within federal agencies. Democrats, on the other hand, are working to delay its progress, hoping to minimize potential damage.
The final showdown is expected in the Supreme Court, where conservative judges hold a majority. If the court rules in favor of DOGE, it could lead to one of the most extensive government purges in U.S. history.
