The Greek newspaper Ta Nea published an analytical report that highly evaluates the development of Turkey’s defense industry. According to the report, the country has transformed over the past two decades from an import-dependent buyer into a global arms producer. The role of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is emphasized, as he has consistently pursued technological independence in the military sector.

According to the analysis, around 2,000 companies operate in Turkey’s defense sector, employing over 100,000 people. Thanks to large-scale modernization of its industrial base and exports to nearly 170 countries, Turkey has become one of the leading players in the global arms market.

Experts cite the following figures:

  • In 2002, the defense industry’s turnover was $1 billion; by 2022, it had exceeded $11 billion.

  • The sector’s annual budget grew from $5 billion to $60 billion.

  • Dependence on foreign supplies dropped from 70% to 20%, with plans to reduce it further by 2025.

In recent years, Turkey has actively expanded its export markets, including European countries. Spain ordered 24 Hürjet trainer aircraft, while Portugal’s Navy purchased two logistic support vessels from STM. The Bayraktar TB2 drones have become a major export success, with over 30 countries acquiring them. NATO members Poland, Romania, and Croatia also selected Turkish UAVs as alternatives to the American MQ-9 Reaper.

Turkey’s acquisition of the Italian company Piaggio Aerospace boosted its presence in the European aviation market. In March 2025, Baykar signed a strategic partnership with Italian defense giant Leonardo, further enhancing its international cooperation profile.

According to the Global Firepower Index, Turkey ranks 9th in the world in military strength. Analysts forecast that the European market for reconnaissance and combat UAVs will reach $100 billion over the next decade, with Turkey expected to increase its share in this segment.

Analysts emphasize that Turkey no longer produces weapons solely for its own needs. It has become a significant player in the global military balance, capable of influencing geopolitical processes both regionally and beyond.
