Germany is considering the withdrawal of approximately 1,200 tons of gold reserves stored at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The move stems from concerns over future U.S. financial and foreign policy in the event of Donald Trump’s return to power. Although not officially confirmed, discussions are reportedly already underway within the German government.

The reserves in question exceed €100 billion in value, making this potentially the largest gold repatriation in history. Germany has conducted similar operations before: between 2013 and 2017, the country repatriated a significant portion of its gold from the U.S. and France. However, the current plan would be far more extensive — and politically sensitive.

Berlin's concerns are rooted in fears of financial instability and possible restrictions on reserve access if U.S. foreign policy becomes more isolationist or confrontational. Risks mentioned include asset freezes, seizures, or political pressure in the event of heightened geopolitical tension.

Analysts are drawing parallels to Charles de Gaulle’s actions in the 1960s, when France demanded conversion of its dollar reserves into gold — a move that contributed to the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. Then, as now, the issue of gold reserves has resurfaced amid rising political uncertainty and global shifts.

Should Germany proceed with full repatriation, the move could impact financial markets, currency valuations, and global trust in the U.S. dollar as a reserve asset. It could also have political ramifications, both in U.S.–Germany relations and within the European Union.
