France has changed its approach to the ICC warrants: Putin vs Netanyahu
In 2023, France supported Putin's arrest warrant, and in 2024 declared Netanyahu's immunity.
On March 18, 2023, France expressed its full support to the International Criminal Court (ICC) after issuing an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said: "No one can escape justice."
However, on November 26, 2024, when the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, France's position turned out to be different. The French Foreign Ministry stressed that: "Netanyahu has immunity as the current head of government."
This difference in approaches is explained by the fact that Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC, which France used as an argument. This dual attitude of France raises questions about the consistency of its policy in support of international justice.
