France and Britain to Send Troops to Ukraine to Help Build a New Army
Macron and Zelensky announce plans for a European contingent capable of fighting alongside Kyiv.
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the decision to send a delegation of military specialists from France and the United Kingdom to Ukraine. The main task of the mission will be to develop the concept for a future Ukrainian army, adapted to modern warfare, including a potential ceasefire and participation of international forces.
According to Macron, within the next three weeks, a “coalition of the willing” should present a unified proposal for maintaining a ceasefire. He emphasized that “Russia does not get to decide whether peacekeepers will be in Ukraine.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, expressed support for the idea of a European military contingent, stressing that this is not about classical peacekeeping forces.
“We want European soldiers who will fight. We do not need peacekeepers. We are talking about a contingent at sea, on land, and in the air,” he said.
Zelensky also stated that, in the event of negotiations to end the conflict, France and Germany would represent European interests, and this has already been agreed upon with other nations.
The Ukrainian president’s rhetoric is becoming increasingly firm. He compared Russian policy to predatory instinct and stated: “To me, Russians are dinosaurs — they want to eat us.”
Thus, the West is intensifying discussions around military and political involvement in Ukraine’s postwar future, including the possible presence of a European military contingent. Detailed proposals are expected by mid-April.
