Fake receipt scam spreads on social media using AI tools
Women reportedly use ChatGPT to generate fake receipts and trick men into reimbursing them for imaginary expenses.

A controversial trend is gaining traction on international social media platforms, where some users — primarily women — are using advanced versions of ChatGPT to create fake receipts. The goal is to simulate expenses for dinners or food deliveries and then request reimbursement from men under false pretenses.
Creating these forged documents takes only a few minutes. Users input key details — date, location, amount, and item description — and the AI generates a realistic-looking receipt. The scammer then sends the fake proof of payment and asks the recipient to “pay back” the supposed expense.
Experts warn that this is a form of digital fraud and may fall under criminal statutes related to document forgery or financial deception, depending on national laws.
AI platforms and developers explicitly discourage such misuse. OpenAI’s terms of service strictly prohibit using its models for fraud, document falsification, or unjust enrichment.
Cybersecurity specialists urge users not to send money without clear, verified justification, especially in personal or informal contexts. If something feels suspicious, users should verify claims, avoid emotional pressure, and save messages as evidence if necessary.
