European Commission probes Telegram user numbers in Europe for possible tighter regulation
The European Commission has launched an investigation into the number of Telegram users in Europe, casting doubt on the claimed 41 million. The investigation could lead to tighter regulation of the messenger.
The European Commission has launched an investigation into the number of users of the Telegram messenger in Europe, questioning the platform’s stated figure of 41 million people. Commission spokesman Thomas Renier noted that they estimate that the real number of users could be higher, which could classify Telegram as a “very large platform” under European regulations.
If the number of users exceeds 45 million, this would allow the European Commission to apply stricter regulatory measures to the messenger. Renier stressed that the investigation is being carried out thoroughly and objectively, but is not related to recent events concerning Telegram founder Pavel Durov.
Such a development could have a significant impact on Telegram’s operations in Europe, including possible new requirements for data protection, transparency and reporting.
